A new dress and an apple
I started this year by buying something really nice: A brandnew and phantastic Bernina overlock sewing machine/serger. I already sewed some cute dresses for my daughter with my Pfaff sewing machine – and although I really liked the results, I was always aware that I would need a serger soon.
And now I’m learning to work with my wonderful new serger – and it’s really true (like many told me): It’s much easier to work with a serger than you might think.
I’m not a fan of buying patterns and working after them – this is cutting back my creativity way too much. So usually I’m designing my own patterns and using bought patterns only to see how special problems are solved. I think the best book for learning to work with stretch fabrics is „Sew U: Home Stretch“. I found most of my questions answered there so far. And together with the really, really good book „Serger Secrets: High-Fashion Techniques for Creating Great-Looking Clothes“ (I absolutely dislike the style of the clothes in this book – but the informations in general are priceless!) you can start to sew your own clothes right away.
And I did (and didn’t even own those books at that point) – and as it’s very cold now here in Berlin, I sewed a cute, very simple and warm little dress for my daughter. And she loves it. It’s not perfect – but I think it’s ok for a serger beginner :-)
Btw: Do you like the apple Lilith is playing with? I LOVE it – and I got it from Lorelei. She has an amazing blog (in German), you find her work on flickr and she has a shop on dawanda.
Das Kleid ist süß, aber deine Tochter ;-)! Die ist ja zum knutschen! LG, Fee
